What Is This? A single-page, browsable index of Stephen T. Abedon's publications — authored and edited books, edited special issues, peer- and editor-reviewed articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, conference proceedings, a book review, a dissertation, and preprints. Filter by topic (lysis timing, lysis profile, biofilms, plaques, phage therapy, lysogeny, archaeal viruses, ecology, history, methods, blog posts, translations, other; topics overlap), by publication type, by single-authored only, or by free-text search, and follow the link for each entry to its DOI, PubMed record, or web page. Every filtered view has its own shareable link, so you can hand someone a URL that opens directly on, say, just the biofilms publications.

🎬 Biology as Poetry Videos

The Biology as Poetry channel, listed most-watched first. Videos shown in YouTube Studio as unlisted or private — largely recorded class lectures — have been removed. View counts are lifetime totals as of the date shown below and will drift after that.

📗 Editings

Chapters and articles appearing in the volumes and special issues Stephen T. Abedon edited or co-edited. These are other authors’ publications, not his, and so are kept out of the publication list, its counts and its filters — they are gathered here so the volumes can be browsed and their contents cited. Pieces he wrote himself are marked S.T.A. publication and are listed for the sake of completeness, but they are his own work rather than his editing and so are left out of the count below.

📑 Book Chapters & Encyclopedia Articles

Every book chapter and encyclopedia article, grouped by the volume it appears in and ordered by how many pieces each volume holds. Chapter titles link into the Browse tab.

📕 Books & Special Issues

Authored and edited books, and edited journal special issues — the larger-scale, book-length outputs, gathered here for emphasis. Each entry links to its publisher page, DOI, or issue. These also appear, filterable, under Browse.

🔗 Citing

What has been cited here, and for what reason. Read out of the published papers themselves rather than compiled by hand, so that a work used to make a particular argument can be found again without going back through multiple possible sources. Choosing a subject lists the works cited under it, each with the number of times it was cited for that reason. Opening a row shows the sentences it was cited in and which paper cited it. Works that are Abedon’s own carry a link back to their entry in Browse.

ℹ️ About This Index

This page indexes the formal publications listed in the curriculum vitae of Stephen T. Abedon. Each entry carries a publication type and one or more overlapping topic tags, and is flagged open access when its full text is freely readable online (a gold-OA journal, a free PMC/CDC/CSIRO record, or a free web page). Topic and open-access tagging are editorial and refined over time; if an entry looks mis-tagged, that is a data fix, not a code change. Several borderline hybrid-journal articles are left unmarked rather than overclaimed.

Output by year

Each bar is one year, divided by kind of publication. Click any year — in the chart, the legend, or the table — to see that year’s entries under Browse. Chapters in volumes edited by others are not counted here; those are on the Editings tab. Note that 2022 stands unusually tall because the 25 chapters of that year’s monograph, Bacteriophages as Drivers of Evolution, are each listed separately — each carries its own DOI — alongside the book itself.

Output per year, over various intervals — everything held here

Computed from the entries above rather than transcribed, so it stays current. Note that it counts blog posts, and counts each of the 25 chapters of the 2022 monograph separately, so it runs higher than the equivalent table in the CV.

Output per year — conservative count

The same years counted the way they would be claimed: peer-reviewed and editor-reviewed articles, book chapters, encyclopedia articles — rewritten versions included, since each is written afresh — and books, whether authored or edited. The twenty-five chapters of the 2022 monograph count once, as that book. Blog posts, preprints, reprints and other re-publications, the dissertation, the conference paper, the book review, and chapter appendices are all left out, as are edited special issues apart from the 2010 ‘Nuts and Bolts’ issue, which was assembled as the equivalent of a monograph. Bars reaching the goal of five are shown in green.

Two kinds of category. Subject (the coloured chips) says what a work is about; publication type says what it is, and is shown as a small emoji on each entry — hover any emoji to see its name, or use the Publication type menu to filter.

Topics. General phage covers broad overviews of phage biology; Lysis timing covers latent-period and lysis-inhibition work; lysis profile covers the measured lysis curve (optical-density/turbidity, KOTE, plate-reader and Klett data); biofilms covers biofilm and microcolony targets; plaques covers phage plaque formation, growth, and enumeration; phage therapy covers therapeutic and biocontrol pharmacology; lysogeny covers temperate-phage lysogeny, lysis–lysogeny decisions, and lysogenic conversion; archaeal viruses covers viruses of the Archaea and their impact on archaeal hosts; history covers the history of phage research and its terminology; methods covers protocol- and technique-focused work; blog posts and translations cover pieces posted at asmallerflea.org, the latter being English renderings of historical French phage papers; ecology covers phage evolutionary and spatial ecology; other collects methods, history, terminology, and non-phage work. Because a single paper often spans several of these, topics overlap by design.

🔑 Shared Access

Enter the password to reveal the 📄 Text Only and 📘 Text download links throughout the Browse and Books tabs (and the Text Only Zip). The same password opens the files themselves — the first file you open will prompt once for the folder login.

What unlocking does. It shows the download buttons and the Text Only Zip in this browser. It is a convenience layer, not encryption: the filenames are present in this page's source, so hiding the buttons deters casual visitors and crawlers but not a determined viewer. The real protection is that the folder itself requires the login before any file is served. The password is stored here only as a one-way hash, so it can't be read from the page. To change it, run this in a browser console and paste the result over GATE_HASH in the source:
crypto.subtle.digest('SHA-256', new TextEncoder().encode('YOUR-NEW-PASS')).then(b=>console.log([...new Uint8Array(b)].map(x=>x.toString(16).padStart(2,'0')).join('')))
